Anything is possible in our imagination. It’s the playground where we can put Emperor penguins on the moon, camels in Antarctica… or zebras at Coney Island! This print juxtaposes a unique experience of mine as well as one of my great loves, all in one collage. As opposed to the vibrant, energetic venue we normally envision as Coney Island, I experienced it during the bleak New York winter, when both the park and beach were uninhabited. A photo I snapped of the scene became this print’s background.
Over it I superimposed a species that has captivated me: the zebra. The picture is one I snapped of wild zebra that roam on the Hearst estate in California.
To add drama to the whimsy, I added a bright red panel on the right side. It sports the text of the song “Animal Fair,” (in multiple languages, of course) because who knows what other travelers might be joining these creatures? Unlike zebras, imagination is never black and white.
