The women in my family are all pretty crafty. They like to knit, embroider and sew. One of my most cherished possessions is a calico quilt that my aunt made many years ago, which has a place of honor at the foot of the bed. At times, if I look at the quilt squares long enough, they remind me of windows. It feels as if I can look through one area into something that is beyond, even though the surface of the fabric is flat. This notion was the inspiration behind the “Modern Calico” print tunic.
The print combines several color variations of small repeating flowers, along with a couple of pillars that move from the top to the bottom of the shirt. The square “windows” draw one’s gaze inward, offering a 3D view of the vertical line behind it. My friend Nancy told me that this is her favorite tunic because she likes the black V-neck style collar and claims that the dark trim flatters her figure – and who can argue with that? |
